Productivity and profit growth comes from the successful combination of People, Process and Technology. With technology evolving and developing at an unprecedented pace then to take advantage our people and processes must be able to adapt and evolve. Technology can support better decision making, collaborative working and the automation of work.
But how many times have you invested in a new piece of technology or system and not gained the Return On Investment (ROI) that you wished? It’s a common theme. There are various reasons why, but the majority of the time it comes back to People. Either the purchase was wrong in the first place, the true need was not understood or the skills, processes and new habits were not developed to achieve that ROI.
I have learnt over the years that change takes conviction and is rarely painless; win hearts and minds and it becomes easier. Senior leadership must be aligned or else benefits are never gained. Involve those who are affected from the beginning and the solutions are always better. They understand what really happens day to day and this input is vital for any solution to be successful.
The most successful factory redesign I ever did worked well because we put the plans on the existing factory wall and asked for everyone’s input. The scribbled-on plan drove changes resulting in higher productivity, safety and buy-in.
With system implementations I normally go step by step removing old systems as new goes live, creating wins and commitment. At times with so-called “Enterprise Resource Planning,” (ERP), the step was big in terms of getting to live accurate stock and be able to receive an order, produce and ship the product and invoice. With things like Office 365 I started with email and Word, Excel and Powerpoint, then SharePoint. Each time adding functionality that builds on the last. This approach meant that with ERP it was used, and the information generated supported business critical decisions that ensured profitability. With O365 the additional functionality has reduced costs of travel, printing and time and improved communication and openness.
My passion is to help improve productivity and profit in companies by helping them identify where value can be created, developing a plan and then supporting its delivery. I have wide experience at senior and operational roles across many functions in the agri-food sector. This knowledge of how it links together gives me great insight into why, who, how and what is needed to make it work.
