An exciting and rewarding opportunity is being offered for a 6 month placement vacancy split between two of East Anglia’s leading but very different fresh produce companies; Vegetable Consultancy Services (UK) Ltd (agronomy, consultancy and field trials) and Elveden Farms (large scale fresh produce growers).
For the successful applicant this is an excellent opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of field vegetable production whilst building technical crop knowledge and learning the fundamentals of field trials.
Vegetable Consultancy Services (UK) Ltd:
Vegetable Consultancy Services (UK) Ltd (VCS), is an independent company, providing agronomy and consultancy services in the UK and worldwide. Established in 1996 and based in East Anglia, VCS provides agronomy services for a wide range of field crops, specialising in Alliums, Umbeliferae, Brassicae & Potatoes and totalling over 15,000 ha of both conventional and organic production. An integral part of the VCS business is the provision of support services to its clients such as; crop sampling, quality analysis and pest & disease monitoring. In addition to the agronomy and consultancy business VCS operates a field trials team specialising in trials associated with all aspects of field vegetable production. Trials are centred within the East Anglia region but work has been undertaken across the UK as well as in Europe.
The Role (VCS):
Whilst at VCS you will be involved in all aspects of work associated with the implementation of the comprehensive trials programme; including establishing trials, field assessments, harvesting and data collation. The technical assistant will also help in the provision of support services to growers. You will work alongside the Trials Manager and a team of technical specialists.
The Elveden Estate comprises over 9,000 ha of forest, heathland and farmland in the Breckland area on Norfolk – Suffolk Border. The farming enterprise, Elveden Farms, currently farms over 3,800 ha at Elveden and contract farms a further 3,750 ha spread between 3 businesses at; Donington, Lincolnshire, Coldham Hall, Cambridgeshire and The Goole Estate, Yorkshire. The Elveden farming business is driven by efficiency, sustainability and using the application of science into best practice, whilst maintaining the traditional landscape and enhancing the environment.
The Role (Elveden Farms):
Whilst at Elveden Farms you will have the opportunity to gain technical knowledge on a large scale Fresh Produce Farm. The role will primarily be outdoor based quality sampling the farms field vegetable crops (potatoes, parsnips, carrots & onions) but with a requirement to use QC facilities for assessing fresh produce. You will work alongside the Farms Technical Manager and Technical Assistant through the busy harvest period; sampling crops and establishing & assessing on-farm trials.
Key Attributes required for both roles:
- Although working as part of small teams there is also a requirement to be able to work unassisted and to be able to plan and prioritise work
- Good communication skills are
- The candidate should also be able to make detailed assessments and record information
- A thorough knowledge of Microsoft Excel together with a working knowledge of other Microsoft Office programmes is
- Most importantly the candidate will need to be timely, hard-working and have a strong desire to learn about all aspects of field vegetable
- The ability to operate machinery is advantageous but not essential, as are any Pesticide Application certificates.
- A full UK driving licence is essential/
